Parabens are a group of chemicals that are used in many beauty products. They are primarily used to inhibit microbial growth and preserve the product. These compounds have been linked to allergic reactions and have been found in the tumors of breast cancer. Although there is not a direct research that links parabens to causing cancer (yet), many have taken the "safer than sorry" approach and avoid paraben all together.

However, it is important to keep mold and bacteria from growing in the products. There are alternative to parabens such as ethylhexylglycerin, derived from plants, or phenoxyethanol, derived from ether alcohol, that ca be used.
